WHAT?! I missed another book release?!!!

February 19, 2016 Discussion 6

(Warning! I got a little over excited with GIFs!)

Don’t you hate it when you find out a book that you have wanted to read for AGES has been released and you totally forgot about it?!

Well it just happened to me … again!

Another book that had been on my TBR for ages and I was so excited to read for months and months and then … I totally forgot about it!

This happens to me a lot with series because the gap in between book releases is normally around a year (which is total torture if it is an amazing series) so that is a lot of time to have remember the next book release. Especially since I will probably be starting like another hundred series (slight exaggeration!) in that time. As much as I try to make myself remember, a lot of the time it just doesn’t happen.

This always makes me feel like a failure of a fan though. How can I love the series if I can’t even remember the next book! I am super scared of forgetting the release of The Winners Kiss (Marie Rutkoski) at the moment. The release date isn’t for like another month, but I am on Goodreads nearly every day, just checking in case I got it wrong!

This also happens to me a lot with standalones, which was the case this time (how could I forget about Passenger?!!). I spend a lot of time browsing Goodreads for books I want to read, many of which are future releases, and put a whole load of them on my TBR (this is not helping with my challenge of culling my TBR down to 300 books!).

So they are on my TBR, all ready for me to read … and then I forget about them! And then months later I start seeing reviews for them on peoples blogs and I’m like:

WHAT?! I FORGOT IT! BUT I WANTED TO READ THAT BOOK IMMEDIATELY!

So how to stop this? How to make sure I NEVER forget about a book release EVER AGAIN?!!!

I’ve tried a few methods before including putting them on my calender and a reminder app on my phone. But I always find that they ping up at the worst time, and then by the time I am near a computer or have the time to actually buy the book I’ve forgotten about it all over again!

I read this post from Cait at Paper Fury about the things she would change about Goodreads if she ruled the world (she is just waiting on her dragon to appear). One of the things she said would be alerts for books that are on your TBR on or just before the release date.

That would be useful, but then at the same time I have A LOT of books on my TBR which I am probably never going to read and just added because it looked nice (this is the reason for my needing to cull) and so would it get annoying getting tons of notifications from Goodreads for books I actually don’t want to read?

Basically I think I just need to be more organised (story of my life) and find a way of remembering and stick to it! And then I can have more happy moments when I actually remember a book and get to buy it on the day it’s released an not months later!

So my question is: how do you make sure you never miss a book release?

Have you ever forgot a book release for a book you REALLY wanted to read?

Aw, I’m sorry you missed a book release date!

I have an android phone, so everything for me is google. I use Google Calendar for multiple things. I have a calendar for my dates, I have one with my husband, I have a blog calendar, and I have a release dates calendar. All events show up on one calendar, so you don’t have to look at four separate ones. Each different calendar is color coated (personal- purple, husband – orange, book release dates – gray, etc). I have a widget on my phone, so I see it every time I unlock my phone. I love how accessible it is.

I hope you have luck finding something that works! Have a great weekend, Hannah!

Wow, sounds very organised! I will have to try using a calendar again, it does seem like the best way!

YES WE NEED TO CHANGE GOODREADS TO FIX THIS OMG. XD I don’t usually miss releases? I thought Passenger came out later than it did, so I kind of got surprised by that one…buuut, most books that I’m highly anticipating I seem to remember. I mean, I can’t remember MY OWN PHONE NUMBER, but I can remember book release dates. #priorities. 😂

Haha, oh dear. Well I guess it could be worse then, at least I know my own phone number!

This may sound strange, but I actually like missing book releases sometimes. It means the hype has died down some about it and I can read it without everyone else’s thoughts influencing me. That being said, I do like to buy the books I’m really excited for as soon as possible. I write a post at the beginning of each month about what books I’m most excited for each month and that helps remind me about the books coming out that I’m dying to buy. It’s great because once a week I’ll flick back to it and see which books I need to buy and decide if they’re immediate buys or just ones I’ll buy when I see it in the shop.

I do quite like it when I’m so late with a book release that the next book has been released and I can read both books together! But then, like you I am normally just so excited too! Your’s sounds like a good way of remembering!
