never let me go girl with dragon tatoo fallen star

Never Let Me Go – I don’t know, I just don’t feel like this really fits with the story. Not a fan of the face on the cover.

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo – Not a fan of this one. I don’t like the colours and the figure of the dragon is just kind of lost in the cover. I would have preferred a darker cover with a more striking dragon image.

The Fallen Star – Now normally I am a fan of covers with eyes on them, but this one isn’t as striking as some of my favorites.

afterlife breaking dawn

Afterlife – This one just seems a bit bland. Like with the previous one, the eye just isn’t as striking as I like them. Nothing really stands out about it to me.

Breaking Dawn – All of the Twilight covers are slightly odd, but this one I think is the weirdest. It doesn’t fit with the story at all?!

And, because I ran out of covers I’m filling the rest of my top ten with…

COVERS THAT HAVE ALREADY BEEN REDESIGNED/HAVE DIFFERENT EDITIONS
.
across the universe double

Across the Universe – This book should have NOT been redesigned. It’s not that the redesign (on the right) is bad, I actually kind of like it. But I just LOVE the original and think it links with the story so well.

.
gone double

Gone – This book has an English edition and an American edition and I much prefer the English cover (on the left). I think I’m one of those people who think that simple is better. I have the set of books and I really love the way they look on my bookcase with their different coloured titles that stand out against the simple black cover.

. under the never sky doubleUnder the Never Sky – Another book with both English (left) and American (right) editions. However this time I would definitely pick the American over the English. I don’t know, the English just seems a bit childish. Plus I much prefer the colours on the American cover.

.
divergent doubleDivergent – I was gutted when I bought this book on my Kindle and got the cover on the right. I really really really like the American cover (on the left). I just think it fits in so much better with the story. I really wish I had gotten to pick my cover!

What do you think of my choices? Do you think any of these should be redesigned too?

What is on your list?

I’m guessing the Breaking Dawn has something to do with chess moves–strategy, how a pawn can take down a bigger piece, etc. Maybe?

Hadn’t seen that Divergent redesign before. That is WEIRD! She looks angsty. Tris isn’t angsty. And what are those birds? Vultures going in for a bite?

I think the birds are meant to represent her tattoo, but I know what you mean. I really was gutted when my book had that cover. Wish I lived in America!
I guess that makes sense. It is a nice design, but for me just not what I wanted on the cover of the final book.

    • Broc's Bookcase

Exactly. As much as people say they are not going to judge the book by the cover, its one of the most important things, its the thing that draws you to it! So of course it needs to be good! Thanks for checking out my list, like your alternative list. As much as I hate it when book are re-released with the movie cover I have to admit that the hobbit movie cover is one of my favourites in your list.

I just feel that the story is so powerful and the cover just completely let’s it down. Not a book that I would initially pick up just on the cover.

  2. Reviews From A Bookworm

Great picks! I quite liked both covers for Divergent, I bought the UK one because the America cover was only available here in weird large paperback, which I don’t like. Definitely agree with the other three choices you made as well, the Gone cover is better simpler and those models are awful! My TTT.

The English cover isn’t too bad, I just wish I had had the choice as I do prefer the American.
I agree with you about the models. They just look a bit silly in my opinion!

  3. Wendy Darling (@MissWendyD)

I liked the original ACROSS THE UNIVERSE cover so much better, too–and I agree, NEVER LET ME GO and DRAGON TATTOO could both use makeovers! Covers are such a big part of why a book gets picked up and noticed, so it’s a shame when a great book is stuck with an unappealing jacket.

Exactly. I wonder how many amazing books I have missed out on because the cover didn’t stand out to me at the bookshop/library/on amazon!
