Ten Bookish Things I Resolve To Do in 2016

January 5, 2016 Top Ten Tuesday 15

Top Ten Tuesday

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Broke & The Bookish.
Each week they release a Top Ten Theme and invite everyone to join in and make their own Top Ten List.

Ok, this year I am definitely sticking to my resolutions! I promise… I think.

I had a look back at my 2015 resolutions yesterday and I actually only ended up fulfilling 3 of them. So this year I need to achieve at least 4 of them and I’ll be happy! I went for all bookish resolutions this year too, and feel (mostly hope) that they are a lot more achievable!

There are quite a few of my all time favourite series that I read before I started Broc’s Bookcase and I’ve never reviewed on here. Series like Harry Potter, the Inheritance Cycle, His Dark Materials, the Hunger Games etc. I am always talking about how much I love these series but I don’t show it on my blog. Plus I am taking part in a reread challenge this year so this will most definitely help towards that too!

For the past few years I have always said that I am going to finish all the series I am reading, which is stupid because by the time I get to the end of the year I have always started more so I am back where I started. This year I am going to finish 5 that I started pre-2016. First on the list is the Gone series and Percy Jackson!

This year I managed to get my TBR down from nearly 1000 books to less than 800. This year I’m going to get it below 300! Every time I look through it there are always so many books that I don’t even remember putting on there so there is definitely a lot of culling to be done, as well as a lot of reading of the ones that I keep forgetting are on there!

I’m trying to be better at reading different things and I am actually taking part in the Pop Sugar 2016 Reading Challenge because I think that it will be a great way to do so. Non Fiction isn’t something I read a lot of, but I am determined to learn something new this year and so thought maybe I could combine that want with reading some Non Fiction. I’ve gone easy on myself though and only aimed for 6, which gives me plenty of time to do it this year.

I’ve been trying so hard this year to be better at replying to peoples comments and to actually take the time out to comment on other peoples posts. I find that I go through weird blasts of visiting other blogs and commenting and then I wont do anything for like a month after that. I am always missing out of excellent posts because I don’t visit other blogs enough. So this is something I want to become better at this year.

I started doing this a bit more in 2015 but I want to try and do it for all of my reviews this year. It’s such a good way to help promote these authors and their books and it’s really not all that hard to just copy a review from one to the other, but alas I don’t do it enough!

I think I put this on every single year, but this year will be the one, I feel it! (she says at 10am on Tuesday, writing her Top Ten Tuesday post in work!) Ok, so maybe it will take me some time to get into it, but by the end of this year I will be a scheduling queen! (Maybe)

For the past two years I have attended YALC (basically the UK version of BEA for those of you who don’t know) and I absolutely love it. I’ve already got my tickets for this summer but I want to find even more events to go to. They are always so much fun and I have met some great people (both authors and attendees) before at them. Plus … signed books! Yeay!

I am constantly posting about bookish things to make in my Sunday Funday posts and I have an enormous pile of second hand books that I have been collecting for these crafts, but still haven’t used. I have big plans this year to make my own bookish Christmas decorations, but I also have some other fun crafty things that I want to make too. I’m thinking that my house needs more Harry Potter arty things…

I love reading, but with everything going on in my life at the moment I don’t have nearly enough time to just sit and read. I want to make more ME time in 2016 when I can just pick up a book and zone out for a few hours rather then reading books on my phone in little 10 minute spurts.

What resolutions did you pick this week? Are yours bookish, personal or a mix of the two?Β

What do you think of my choices?Β Are any of these on your list this week too?

Re-reading favourite series and reviewing it is something I’ve been meaning to do for so long/more often as there’s a few series I have yet to properly review on my blog (the Old Kingdom books, Kingdom of Thorn and Bone, Memory Sorrow and Thorn trilogy, etc.). Maybe this year? It’s obviously not an absolute requirement or anything but there are some series out there that I love and need to share (a la book review, lol) xD

Best of luck with your resolutions this year! My TTT

These are really good goals, Hannah! I like your idea of switching the series goal to finishing 5 you’ve already started, because you’re right, by the end of the year, I’ve usually started at least as many series as I’ve finished. And I love the TBR pruning goal; that’s something I really, really need to do. Mine is over 700 books, and I’ve got a separate “someday” list that’s over 600 books, so the combo is really intimidating. No way will I ever read all of those; I should whittle the lists down. And more time to read? Heck yes!!!

    • Brocs Bookcase

I started culling today and although I only got rid of 22 so far (and it took 4 hours!) it’s helped me to rediscover some of the books that are on there that I totally forgot about too.
There are some series that I am totally ashamed that I haven’t finished yet and I REALLY REALLY want to, I just keep picking up other books first!
Thanks fr stopping by and happy new year! πŸ™‚

Great goals, Hannah! We have several in common – like finishing series and scheduling posts in advance (although I am not overly optimistic about the latter LOL). I’m looking forward to a few book events this year as well. They’re always fun!

Great post! I really hope you finish Percy Jackson this year! I love that series so much; it’s amazing. If you’re looking for a great non-fiction novel, I would definitely recommend Redefining Realness by Janet Mock. It’s more of a memoir, but it’s an absolutely amazing and powerful book. I read it this year for one of my classes and loved it. Happy 2016!

    • Brocs Bookcase

Thanks so much for the recommendation, I’ve added it to my list of potentials it looks really interesting.
I really hope I finish Percy Jackson too! I’m sick of everyone telling my hos amazing it is and not knowing for myself!!!!
Thanks for stopping by and happy new year!

Haha, I’m well on the way, did some culling today and took 22 off YEAY! Only another 400 and something to go! Good luck with your goals too πŸ™‚

It would be absolutely lovely to find more time to read. During the week I have such a hard time fitting reading in around teaching sometimes. I would love to just have some extra hours where I’m not completely drained to spend reading.
As for commenting, I am rather terrible about commenting on other people’s blogs. Most of the time I “think” a comment as I’m reading a post but then never “actually” comment.
You have some great goals. Thanks for sharing!

    • Brocs Bookcase

I know exactly what you mean. By the time I have gotten back from work, cooked, eaten, washed up etc I am totally drained and don’t have the energy to even lift up a book. I usually end up watching something rubbish on tv and falling asleep! Haha, well at least you are thinking things to say, now you just need to make sure to write them down! Thanks for stopping by πŸ™‚

  6. Michelle @ Pink Polka Dot Books

I can’t wait to see what bookish crafts you make!! I love seeing what kind of creative stuff people come up with… especially when it involves books!! I’m really bad at scheduling reviews… like super really bad. I think that after almost 4 years of blogging I would have figured it out by now, but maybe I should just admit that being ahead of the game isn’t my style. Hahaha. Anyway happy 2016!!

  7. Trish @ Between My Lines

I’m so guilty to talking up a storm about some of my fav books too (Harry Potter, The Hunger Games) but haven’t reviewed them either on the blog. So I love that you are going to go back and do just that. And finishing series, I so badly need to tackle into that this year. I swear by scheduling posts though as it just works so well for me and means I don’t have to do seat of the pants ones!
Good luck with all your goals πŸ™‚

    • Brocs Bookcase

I just feel like they deserve to be on my blog, since I love them so much.I’ so jealous of your scheduled posts! I will get better this year! πŸ™‚ Thanks for stopping by
