BEWARE: this page contains some light spoilers (but no major ones!)
Firstly I just wanted to comment on the gorgeous artwork that is the covers to the Across the Universe Series. There were a few different covers created for the series but these two sets are by far my favourite.
I love the colours of the above covers, and I really like that they are centred around the stars as they are such an important thing throughout the series.
I really like the theme of the books below as they are based on Godspeed however each cover has it’s own element added in reference to what its book is about. For example Across the Universe has a frozen feel to it as this is the book that centres around the frozen people in storage.
OUR HERO & HEROINE
AMY: Stubborn & smart with a hint of pathetic-ness.
Me and Amy are in no way made to be BFF’s. I found her to be pretty annoying at times and definitely would have thrown her out of the hatch at some point. Sure I had sympathy for her at first but I needed her to stop being pathetic at some point and actually do something. Instead she sat and watch her frozen parents. She has her moments of strength, but they are very quickly followed by her retreating back into the “poor me, I need my mummy and daddy” routine. Her finale is totally action packed and she sacrifices a lot in order to save everyone, but for me it was too little too late.
ELDER: The Leader who can’t really Lead
You can’t hate Elder, but I couldn’t love him either. He has all these great morals and always wants to do the right thing for his people, but when it comes to getting them to accept and follow him he kind of fails. But he is loyal to the end, and although its hard to really get any emotion from him, you can tell that he does care about his people. Definitely in need of a little bit of oomph, but he grows some balls by the end of the series, so respect for him there.
POWER COUPLE? You’re kidding me right?
When I compare Amy & Elder to other young couples in dystopian series (Katniss & Peter, Tris & Four, Day & June) they are really really lacking. There is no passion, no chemistry, no fight in them. If they stopped with the kissing then they could just as easily be siblings for the amount of romance that is in their relationship.
Firstly, how amazing is this picture (above). I’ve always wondered what Godspeed would look like. You try and imagine it in your head but you never know if its the same as how the author imagined it. This is really cool though.
GODSPEED: Wow, I loved Godspeed. Firstly, the idea of a series mostly based on a spaceship, genius. It was what pulled me to the series in the first place. The whole layout and life on Godspeed was fascinating. I love the futuristic technology: the travel tubes, the earpieces (although I don’t think I would want one permanently in my head), the laundry baskets & bins that emptied themselves. It was all really cool and totally believable as futuristic technology. The bad stuff: the whole drugged up mind control thing and the Season, well that was just kind of freaky.
CENTAURI EARTH: The whole build up to this new planet was perfect and I was so excited to explore it! It felt very Jurassic Park like to me, with the giant birds who try to eat you and the plants that poison you. Plus I was genuinely scared by the whole “they are watching you” with the potential that there were other people on the planet. The imagination that went into creating this world is amazing, but I only wish that the final book wasn’t so fast paced and we had gotten to see more of it.
“I never thought about how important the sky was until I didn’t have one.”
“This is the secret of the stars, I tell myself. In the end, we are alone. No matter how close you seem, no one else can touch you.”
“Well, sometimes home is a person.”
“Love without choice isn’t love at all.”
“I look up. And I am surrounded by the universe. Silence and stars A million suns stretch out beyond me, their light piercing the darkness.”
“What is in our hearts is real whether we name it or let it exist only in darkness or silence.”
“But death doesn’t work like that. It doesn’t care if someone loves you, doesn’t want you to go. It just takes. It takes and it takes until eventually you have nothing left.”
“We all die someday. Maybe the only thing that makes that fact bearable is the idea that death is the only way we can return to the stars.”
