The Story(summary from Goodreads)

When Ellis Earnshaw and Heathan James met as children, they couldn’t have been more different. Ellis was loud and beautiful – all blond hair, bright laughs and smiles. Heathan was dark and brooding, and obsessed with watching things die.

The pair forged an unlikely friendship, unique and strange. Until they were ripped apart by the sick cruelty of others, separated for years, both locked in a perpetual hell.

Eleven years later, Heathan is back for his girl. Back from a place from which he thought there was no return. Back to seek revenge on those who wronged them.

Time has made Heathan’s soul darker, polluted with hatred and the thirst for blood. Time has made Ellis a shell of her former self, a little girl lost in the vastness of her pain.

As Heathan pulls Ellis out of her mental prison, reviving the essence of who she once was, down the rabbit hole they will go. With malice in their hearts and vengeance in their veins, they will seek out the ones who hurt and destroyed them.

One at a time.

Each one more deadly than the last.

Tick Tock.

*Dark Contemporary Romance. Contains explicit sexual situations, violence, disturbingly sensitive and taboo subjects, offensive language and very mature topics. Recommended for ages 18 and over.*

My Thoughts

Before this book Tillie Cole was already the Queen of Dark Romance, after this book I think she’s made it up there to God of Dark Romance (or Goddess!). If you are not a fan of Dark Romance then this book is definitely NOT for you, if you’re not sure if you’re a fan of Dark Romance then I going to tell you right now, this book is probably not for you either! But, if you love having your mind blown and questioning just how black your heart is after following a very effed up couple doing some very effed up things… then this is definiltey the book for you!

“If all else perished, and he remained, I should still continue to be; and if all else remained, and he were annihilated, the universe would become a mighty stranger”

I have never read a pair of characters like Ellis and Heathen (or Dolly and Rabbit as they are known for the majority of this book) and the entire time I was reading I couldn’t help but imagine them as Harley Quinn and the Jocker. They have that same kind of crazy that perfectly suits each other. I wouldn’t say that they were characters I would ever be friends with (because they scare the sh*t out of me!), and Heathen/Rabbit would not make my list of bookish boyfriends but I was totally routing for them throughout this entire book.

“A path of destruction no one saw coming; the sweetest, most violent deaths carried out with the gentlest of smiles on our faces and the utmost hell in our hearts”

Without giving too much away there is a wonderful sprinkle (a large sprinkle) of Alice in Wonderland in this book and it’s that perfect mix of something massively dark and massively innocent being blurred together and just working. Tillie expertly twisted the wierd and wonderful parts of wonderland into a very dark situation and I’m in awe at the way she did it. I love fairy tale retellings but this was something totally different and it just worked so well.

“It wasn’t anyone’s fault if he didn’t belong in Wonderland

It’s hard to describe the great things about this book without going into too much detail because everyone really should go into his totally blind. I love Tillie’s books because even if I know nothing about the story going into it I know that I’m going to love it. She’s written such a selection of genres but Dark Romance is the place that she relly shines, and I know for a fact that if it weren’t for Tillie I wouldn’t have ever even thought of giving it a chance.

“Time For Tea.

Final Thoughts

Not my favourite Tillie Cole book but one that I appreciate a whole hell of a lot for it’s bravery and skill and just total effed upness.
