The Story

(summary from Goodreads)

My name is Skylar Quinn. I just moved to New York with my best friend Bridget, and I have a confession. Well, more than one. Okay, quite a few really. Fine, here goes!

Confession #1: I’m a sex columnist. Hold on, that’s not really the confession. You see, I’m sort of a virgin…sex columnist.

Confession #2: I’m kind of in love with Bridget’s older brother, Oliver. No, I was. No, I am. Wait, was? Am? Crap.

Confession #3: I’ve been avoiding Oliver for four years. Or I was until today, because he just moved in. Yes, you read that correctly. He’s my new roommate. So that night we’ve both been pretending never happened, well, we might not be able to keep it a secret any longer.

And trust me, this is only the beginning.

My Thoughts

If I had to describe this book by comparing it to other stories I would say ‘The Devil Wears Prada meets Never Been Kissed’. It is so much fun to read and I found myself clock watching at work, counting down the hours until could get home and carry on reading!

At this point I should let you know that I don’t read Adult Lit, not my type of thing. I’m not into the whole ‘grown up, working life, family life problems’ type thing. But there are occasions when I will give something a try, and this book was one of those, and I’m so glad that I did because I loved it!

As I have said above, Devil Wears Prada meets Never Been Kissed. It’s a story that every girl can relate to in some way. We all start off as virgins, and whether we loose it at 16 or 26 (not to say that you can’t loose it at any other age!) I bet we have all had that experience of trying to convince our friends that when it came to sex talk we knew exactly what they were talking about!

Skylar is a great character to follow and I found myself loving her from page one. She is a very real person, not just in the way that she works in the fashion section of a magazine and knows nothing about fashion (because who ever does?!), but just in the way that she is in her her clumsy, word vomit, disaster prone way! She is like the new Bridget Jones! I spent a lot of this book laughing out loud (the rest was all about the swooning) and can honesty say it is probably the most fun I have ever had reading Adult Lit.

Yes, the romance was predictable, but big deal! We always know going into these books exactly what is going to happen. But as a very smart person (no idea who!) once said, “It’s not about the destination, its about the journey.” And this book gives us one hell of a journey!

This book gives us not one but two swoony men, and I can definitely see a ‘Team Patrick / Team Oliver’ debate starting amongst fans of this book! Skylar’s dating experiences are anything but perfect (just wait until you read the Online Dating chapter!), but it just makes us love her all the more, and of course it’s hilarious and just so entertaining!

So my last thing is more of something that I’m not too sure about how I felt and that is the slightly cliffhanger ending which made this book into the first part of a series. Now I would have been very happy with this book being a standalone, I got everything that I wanted from it, and although some of the secondary characters didn’t have tied up story lines, they were done in a way that I was happy for it to end at that point. But now, the description for the second book, I don’t think I want to read it, and I’m totally wishing that this book would have just stayed a standalone!

The Author
kaitlyn davis
I’ve always been a writer. I grew up duct taping my novels together, started writing complete manuscripts in high school and studied creative writing at Johns Hopkins University. Upon graduating, I decided it was finally time to actually give my dream career a chance.

So, of course, I started writing a young adult paranormal romance series — and no, I’m not jumping on the bandwagon. I’ve been a true paranormal supporter for my entire life!

I blame my obsession almost completely on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, my all-time favorite television show. And, before you ask: Yes, I own every season… even the post WB ones! I especially challenge anyone to watch the first three seasons and not fall in love with Angel, securing a lifelong love of vampires!

Other culprits of my paranormal obsession are some of my favorite authors: JK Rowling, Raymond Feist, Meg Cabot, Richelle Mead, Lynne Ewing and Tamora Pierce.

Final Thoughts

If you feel like a giggle then this is the book to you! I can imagine that this would be the perfect beach read and I will definitely be re-reading it at some point soon.

Re-Readability: Yes!

I would recommend this book to fans of: second chance romances, friends to lovers, bridget jones type characters

What do you think? Looks like something you would be interested in reading?

Are you a fan of second chance romances?

See, now the post caught my attention for the book title, and I’m glad I took a nose. I rarely look at a review for a book I haven’t read because I hate both spoilers and letting other people’s opinions affect whether or not I read book, but I’m glad I read this. I am most definitely picking this book up sometime soon, it sounds like my kind of book.

I think I sometimes prefer reading a review from someone who doesn’t read many books in a genre because you always get a better more balanced review because you haven’t read as many books within it.
