After the romantic gesture of the century, Evan Allen is now faced with no friends, ineligible to play ball…and too late to get the girl.
He’s starting over alone and doesn’t know quite how to proceed, until certain members of “The Crew” step in, taking him under their wing. It doesn’t take the ladies long to notice him either.
Sometimes life doesn’t go as you had planned. Sometimes, it goes better.
I was ill when recording this, slumped on the couch. There’s nothing like reading a good romance to make you feel better!
I was initially a bit wary of this book and wasn’t sure if I would like it as much as the first. Book 1 is written from Laney’s POV with occasional chapters from both Dane and Evan’s POV. When I found out this one was going to be predominantly from Evans POV I was slightly wary, especially with the way the book starts for Evan, with him not really being in the best of places emotionally. But very quickly and easily I found myself being pulled into Evan’s mind and enjoying his story.
This book feels very much like a healing book. The love-triangle is over, but the after effects are still resonating with the trio with each of them needing to figure out where they go from here. For Evan that means starting over in a new place and figuring out how to move on with Laney still such a permanent fixture in his life.
I loved Evan in Emerge, and although I was was glad that Laney chose to be with Dane, it was heartbreaking to watch Evan, the sweetest and most romantic character ever to be written, have to go through that. Luckily he gets another chance at happiness in this book with a new love interest, lovingly refered to as ‘Hummingbird’ by Evan. At first I didn’t think I was going to like her, but as we get to know her more she actually becomes this really nice character with a lot more depth then originally thought. She really is the perfect companion for Evan. There relationship takes a while to get going, but once it does it is by far one of the sweetest love stories ever, and by the end of it I found myself happy that Laney had not chosen Evan.
Laney and Dane are still going strong in this book, and we do get the chance to read from their POV too. Laney spends much of this book struggling with her guilt over hurting Evan whilst trying to keep from hurting Dane with her constant thoughts of Evan.
As good as the romantic relationships are in this book, nothing can beat the friendships of The Crew. Never have I loved a group of fictional friends so much. The comfort and familiarity between them makes this close knit group feel more like a family and this story just would not be the same without them. Each character is memorable in their own way, with their own story, their own issues, but as a group they are perfect and in my opinion really become the heart of the story and the best relationship in the book.
One character we get more of in this book is Sawyer. He has always been the joker and the guy that always has everyones back, and in this book he spends a lot of time with Evan, trying to help him come to terms with his new situation. He’s also around for Laney during some of her more emotional moment and we really start to see the deeper part of Sawyer, which I have to admit I LOVE. Is it ok to love three guys from the same book all at once, because I really do!
An Epilogue from Sawyers POV gives us a little teaser of what, hopefully, book three will have to offer, and I am very much looking forward to it.
“The Heart; The only instrument that broken, still works.”
I really enjoyed this book, it was the perfect sequel to Emerge. S.E.Hall really knows how to write romance from both the male, and female perspective incredibly well and I find myself immediately drawn in to her writing.
Re-Readability: Hells yes! I love this group of characters
I would recommend this book to fans of: big friendship groups, books set in college, slow burning romances, second chance romances
I was given the opportunity to ask S.E.Hall some questions, both about her new book and some random ones for a bit of fun…
1. Emerge ends with Laney making her choice between Evan and Dane, would you have picked the same?
Personally, I tend to lean toward the quiet, southern gentlemen so I would have gone with Evan.
2. A lot of authors say they get the inspiration for their characters from people in their lives, did you? And who is your favourite character.
I absolutely did, almost every single one of them. Laney is my favorite character, and very much based off my oldest daughter Lyndsey, 17….who has an Evan, and had a Dane, and a Kaitlyn…and I love my real life Parker like he’s my own.
3. You write both books from a mix of Laney, Evan and Dane’s point of view. Whose your favourite character to write as?
Sawyer….I have to do his POV soon, I love what comes out of his mouth! But of those three, I like to write Dane because he’s so unlike words I actually ever hear spoken.
4. What is your favourite part of Embrace?
I’m pretty partial to Tiny, thinking of getting my own micro pig soon….and the tattoo scene made me cry.
5. Favourite quote from Embrace?
“Only a crazy woman can love you like crazy.”- Evan
6. Best compliment you have received as an author?
Actually, one I got recently really made me laugh….”You are a Jedi Ninja with words, my God!”
7. If you could invite any 5 authors to dinner who would you chose?
Angela Graham, Ashley Suzanne, Stacy Borel, Kelly Elliott and Pamela Ann….because they are all my friends and I adore them! The restaurant quite possibly would kick us out and ban us though. People I don’t know and would love to meet, whole different dinner- Kristen Proby, Olivia Cunning, Nicole Williams, M. Leighton and Chelsea Cameron
8. Typical day in your life?
Get up, go to work, eat dinner, take a bath…go to softball if it’s game night, write and/or type if it’s not.
9. If you were a superhero what would your name and powers be?
I’d grant wishes, like a BOSS genie, and my name would be Miracle McChangeYourLife
10. If someone wrote a book on your life what would it be called?
S.E.Hall resides in Arkansas with her husband of 17 years and 3 beautiful daughters. When not in the stands watching her ladies play softball, she enjoys reading YA and NA romance.
