Monthly Review August 2013

So, I know I’ve only been around a few days and it seems a bit strange to review the month when you guys have not been around so see it. But August has been an amazing month for me, and I really wanted to share it with you all!

.month in 3 words

Broc’s Bookcase (I’m counting that as 1 word!), Festivals, Family.

best things this month

1. FINALLY getting Broc’s Bookcase online has been my best thing this month. I have had an overwhelming response from my friends, family and other people around the world, so thank you all!

2. V Festival: this year we got tickets for the full weekend and it was AMAZING. Beyonce, Jesse J, The Script, McFly, Calvin Harris are just a few of the acts that we saw and they were all FANTASTIC. Plus I got to go with my big sister, and because we didn’t get camping tickets we stayed with my Auntie & Uncle, who we don’t get to see very often, so that was really nice too.

3. Cake Pops! I finally made cake pops, which taste absolutely amazing. The tops got slightly squashed, but they tasted amazing all the same!

4. I made a bed, from scratch (well IKEA flat pack, but that’s basically the same thing, all by myself (nearly, kind of, not really!). Feel so grown up now with my own big double bed, only downside is it takes up most of my room. But not really the biggest problem as I sleep A LOT!

5. As I am writing this I am surround by 7 extra members of my family who have invaded our house for the night for our big family reunion for my uncles’s (2 of them, they’re twins) 60th birthday meal. There is going to be over 20 of us at the restaurant tonight, so we are most definitely taking over the place. So excited though, I love family reunions!

fav book quote this month

looking forward to next month

Since graduation in July I have only seen 1 of my friends from university. In September I’m off to N.Ireland to meet up with a group of my friends and I am SOOOOO EXCITED!!!!! This trip is also going to correspond with the start of my first challenge here on Broc’s Bookcase, so keep checking in for that one!

Cover Stories: “Shatter Me” Series

August 29, 2013 Cover Stories 2

cover stories

As much as I try not to I have to confess that I do judge books by their covers. I will always grab the books with the prettiest cover first, I can’t help it! I LOVE book covers!  Cover Stories is a place for me to share some of my favorite covers of all time, so you may judge them too!

So, today whilst flicking around the internet on my lunch hour (and maybe for a bit after that) I was looking at upcoming books and came across the third book in the Shatter Me series. The cover was mesmerizing, and after a bit of Goodread’s research I found the rest of the series, whose covers were just as amazing! I’m seriously considering putting them in frames and sticking them on my wall!
.As well as the beautiful covers, this series has a pretty awesome story line:

Book 1 Summary (from Goodreads)
Juliette hasn’t touched anyone in exactly 264 days.
The last time she did, it was an accident, but The Reestablishment locked her up for murder. No one knows why Juliette’s touch is fatal. As long as she doesn’t hurt anyone else, no one really cares. The world is too busy crumbling to pieces to pay attention to a 17-year-old girl. Diseases are destroying the population, food is hard to find, birds don’t fly anymore, and the clouds are the wrong color.
The Reestablishment said their way was the only way to fix things, so they threw Juliette in a cell. Now so many people are dead that the survivors are whispering war – and The Reestablishment has changed its mind. Maybe Juliette is more than a tortured soul stuffed into a poisonous body. Maybe she’s exactly what they need right now.
Juliette has to make a choice: Be a weapon. Or be a warrior.

WOW WOW WOW, a crumbling world, superpowers and hints of romance and rebellion in the 2nd book. This series is going to the top of my list to be read before the final book gets released in February!

The Story

(summary from Goodreads)

Getting drunk homecoming night your senior year is never a good idea, but Jake Hayes never expected it all to end with a car crash and a t-post embedded in his throat.

His biggest regret about it all? What he never said to Samantha Shay. He’s been in love with her for years and never had the guts to tell her. Now it’s too late. Because after that night, Jake will never be able to talk again.

When Jake returns to his small island home, population 5,000, he’ll have to learn how to deal with being mute. He also finds that his family isn’t limited to his six brothers and sisters, that sometimes an entire island is watching out for you.

And when he gets the chance to spend more time with Samantha, she’ll help him learn that not being able to talk isn’t the worst thing that could ever happen to you. Maybe, if she’ll let him, Jake will finally tell her what he didn’t say before, even if he can’t actually say it.

Initial Reaction

So, here it is, as promised: my first ever initial reaction video. I’m going to warn you now, there is a little bit of crying involved! I probably should have chose a happier book for my first initial reaction video. But this one deserved the honour, in a big way.
